Hi I am Nicole and I work exclusively with animals. I run a service called Animals at Home (West Essex) Ltd.
Benefits of Healing for Animals
As all forms of Energy Healing whether it be Reiki, or any other system is natural, calming, soothing and relies on love, animals respond to it in a very positive way. They pick up on our intention to help them and as they are in a calm and relaxing environment with no need for disturbance they can focus on recovery. Animals seem to recognise the energy source and are at peace with it. They feel the need to communicate with the healer and may make an unusual sound or demonstrate their gratitude with affection.
Reiki and other Energy Healing systems are a non-threatening way to treat all animals and their conditions. But it is not an alternative to vets. Vets do a lot to assist animals, but the conditions in which they work are alien and frightening to our pets. We tend to only take them to the vet when they are not well, then they get prodded and poked about, needles stuck in them etc. Not a wonderful experience for our animals but a necessary one.
I am not saying you should not take an animal to a vet. I am saying you can work with the vets. If you give Reiki healing to your pet before you go to the vet they will be much more calm. Energy Healing and Reiki cannot hurt anyone or anything it can only do what is for the highest good of the animal, anything to reduce stress and fear will be welcome. Fear is one of the main causes of disease and the inability to recover.
Like with humans, we are working as a complimentary therapy, NOT an alternative. Vets cure specifics. We heal causes in whichever level they may be, physical, emotional, mental, spiritual applies to animals as it does to humans.
All animals respond to Healing Energy – fish, birds, reptiles and mammals large and small can and do make excellent progress. Small animals can be held in cupped hands – larger beings require more hand positions. You can work on animal chakras just like human ones. More of this later.
As with humans the causes of their diseases are the same and the variety of ailments, which can be treated, is just as extensive as it is for humans. Animals’ responses to Reiki cannot be attributed to the placebo effect – they have no expectation or hang ups! They do not fear what they do not understand or maybe they just understand it will help them.
Open wounds need to be treated from the aura so that they heal. Start the treatment on an area of the body where the animal likes to be stroked. The energy will go where it is needed wherever you are healing.
When working with animals ALWAYS, ask the animal’s owner to hold the animal. Especially large animals, you need to keep a close watch on their eyes. Healing energy is very relaxing and they need to stay on their feet. If they fall asleep in their feet and fall over they can injure themselves. If the eyes become glazed STOP, you would not want a horse (for instance) to fall and hurt itself even more. If you are treating horses or cattle remember you are moving around the animal you cannot always be watching their eyes, ensure they owners know what to look for and to let you know if the eyes become glassy. They will become relaxed but practice on pets who are lying down before working on larger animals. Watch the eyes and muscle tone of any animal you are working on and you will get to know the signs.
In cases where animals are distressed, timid or very difficult to handle it is a good idea to beam energy to calm them. You can treat a wild or distressed animal by treating the aura or “beaming” energy. However, it is important to let their human companions know what you are doing. You can also send distance healing (Reiki level 2) but make sure your intention is that they receive it whilst they are lying down or asleep so their can be no possibility of them becoming dozy and falling over.
Some animals may feel a lot of heat or tingling and this may cause discomfort during a treatment. If this is the case and the animal fidgets, gets up and walks away or becomes resistant treat the animal’s aura by holding the hands one or two inches from the body just as if treating a human face or neck. I actually find working in the aura works more powerfully for both humans and animals.
Finally, always remain calm, peaceful and heal from the heart. Observe the same practices as for human treatments, i.e. connecting with the energy, intent and disconnection procedures. Once again, do not diagnose. Animals instinctively know what is good for them but they cannot always convey this to their humans. You may feel it helpful to suggest certain lifestyle changes or that the humans may benefit from Reiki, thereby benefiting the pet also. Domestic animals have little control over their own lives and are powerless to effect change. Animals also have Karmic issues to address in their lives, so once again the power to recover rests with the recipient of the Reiki energy.
There is no right or wrong way to treat an animal. If they want the energy they will move themselves to where they want it. If they do not want it they will get up and walk away. Like humans the energy will flow to where it is needed wherever you place your hands. Intuition is important here. I have found that animals like to have Reiki behind their ears to relax them initially. They do not always feel the need to keep still and they absorb the energy quicker and easier than human adults.
In cases of nervousness it has been suggested that one hand be placed on the spine at the base of the skull, the other on the spine at the base of the tail. Energy flows along the spine and sends out negativity through the tail.
Pets who are well can reject Reiki energy altogether. Pets who are ready to pass over may not accept it either, though in my experience they do because it is relaxing and will lessen fear. Friends cats love Reiki and are very attracted to it. They will accept it at any opportunity and in family treatments have assisted by sitting on a problem area themselves. Dogs however have to be ill or in the mood. Little and often for treatments tends to work best.
If you decide you want to learn to do healing for animals you will need to learn Reiki to at least the Second Degree level, you will need to seek assurance from the pet’s owner that a vet has examined the animal (Veterinary Surgery Act 1996). It is also advisable to go and work with someone or do a workshop specifically designed to work with animals.
